<                               I. INTRODUCTION                              >
 \==========================================================================/

So, hello there. I haven't done a whole lot of FAQ writing since I started to
frequent GameFAQs, but living in Europe I tend to get games when 10 good
walthroughs are already up.

I don't have this problem with this nice, freeware adventure game and so here
I am. Writing this FAQ.

You can download the game from http://www.grundislavgames.com/
You should also visit http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk it's the site of
the game engine used. There you can find a lot more free games (and some
commercial ones) of various lengths. And qualities...

The Ben Jordan games are all point & clicks of excellent quality and it would
be a shame not to play them when, on top of that, they're free. The game is
not exactly difficult (for proof, I finished it) except for that one
frustrating puzzle in the middle. Still, in the hopes that it can be helpful
for some people, here's this FAQ.

I hope you enjoy it.

 /==========================================================================\
<                                 II. CONTROLS                               >
 \==========================================================================/

I think the controls are included in the readme, but then for most FAQs having
a "Controls" section, those are also detailed in the booklet. So here's a
quick review of them.

This plays like one of these old Sierra adventure games.

Move your mouse to the top of the screen to make the menu appear. The icons
are, from left to right:
 WALK - Walk around
LOOK AT - To look at stuff. And get a description. With clues inside it.
INTERACT - Pull a lever, steal keys, punch someone... You know, all these
actions that are performed with your hands? This is the icon to
            use to carry them out.
TALK - To make small talk with people. Not really useful. Maybe some of it is
funny. I wouldn't know, I lost interest is this command pretty
        quickly.
QUESTION - That one makes a dialog box pop up. Use that one on every person
you meet. The key to completing the game is to be thorough about
            that part.
ITEM USED LAST - The last item you selected in your inventory appears here.
INVENTORY - Opens the inventory screen.
NOTEPAD - Read Ben's notes about the case. Can be useful if you took a long
break right in the middle of the game. Or if you have the memory of
           a forgetful oyster.
SAVE - To save your game.
LOAD - To load a saved game.
SETTINGS - Enable or disable voice and text. No, you can't disable both. You
can also enable Designer's commentary, which is quite fun.
HELP - Keyboard shortcuts and stuff like that.
QUIT - To quit the game.

Left click on any of the 6 first icons to change your cursor into it, then
left click to carry it out in the game with the object/person of your choice.
Alternatively, you can cycle through the various cursors by right clicking.

There are three actions you can use in the inventory screen:
SELECT - The arrow button. Click on an item to select it and you'll be able
to use it on another item in the inventory or in the main game.
LOOK AT - Look at your hard won possessions to get some info on them.
INTERACT - Feel how soft all these items are. SOmetimes it produces an useful
effect, like searching through pockets or looking at the other
            side of a note.

And with that you're pretty much set.

 /==========================================================================\
<                               III. WALKTHROUGH                             >
 \==========================================================================/

The game starts with a scene of murder. Doesn't that guy look possessed with
his red eyes and everything? Demons, this time! Yay!

The scene switches to Christmas dinner in the Jordan family. Looks like Mummy
and Daddy aren't too happy about l'il Ben's career choice. You'll leave the
table and go off to sulk in your bedroom.

  )-------------(
 ( BEN'S BEDROOM )
  )-------------(

This is the first room of the game, and quite frankly, it's not easy to find
out how to get out of here.

What you need to do is interact with the boot on the floor to get the moving
story of how Ben chose to be a paranormal investigator. Poor gullible little
Ben. Listen to the Designer's commentary to get the joke. Then look at the
photograph on the bookshelf to get a close-up of Granpa Arthur's picture. Then
look at the wound on his neck, which didn't quite catch my attention during my
first half hour of play. Yes, that's a long time to spend in the first room of
the game.

The phone will ring, which is your cue that you're just about finished here.
A guy named Alessandro Renzi calls from Rome saying he needs to see you. Ben
isn't too sure about this. Interact with the phone and call Simon and Alice.
Simon is quite eager to go, Alice says she'll come as soon as she can.

And off you are, on your way to prove your parents wrong about the whole
"paranormal detective is not a real job" thing. Way to go, kid!

... Sarcasm? Nah.

/                                  DAY ONE                                   \
\                             December 27, 2004                              /
/----------------------------------------------------------------------------\

  )---------------(
 ( L'ALBERGO DANTE )
  )---------------(

You're in your hotel room with Simon where there's nothing to do. Nothing that
will get you points, at any rate. As your sidekick suggested, head out to go
to the police station.

  )--------------(
 ( POLICE STATION )
  )--------------(

Notice a blue cup on the desk. That's kind of a symbol of AGS.

Anyway, interrogate (question mark icon) the Desk Sergeant about Alessandro
Renzi, the man who called you. He'll let you cross the doors to the right to
access the cells.

Go there and interrogate Alessandro Renzi in the last cell. Exhaust all topics
of conversation. You'll get some points and learn a few interesting things:
 - The victim's name is Thomas Ryan.
 - Renzi was possessed by a demon when he killed.
 - He's an actor at Teatro Manzoni.
 - A guy with an English accent told him to call you.
 - The crime scene is in Piazza Mignanella.

You're done here so head back to your hotel.

  )---------------(
 ( L'ALBERGO DANTE )
  )---------------(

Interrogate Simon and exhaust all topics of conversation. Doing that will
become an habit throughout the game.

You'll get the addresses of the church where Thomas Ryan worked, of the
theatre where Renzi worked, and of the crime scene.

Let's go check out these new locations.

  )-----------(
 ( CRIME SCENE )
  )-----------(

Not much to do here. Just pick up the paper at the foot of the door to the
right.

  ITEM: Detective's Business Card

That's all you can do here, so let's get a move on.

  )--------------(
 ( TEATRO MANZONI )
  )--------------(

Interrogate the Usher and as always exhaust all topics of conversation. Be
sure to ask about the door. She says she can't let you through unless you've
got proof that you're not just some crazy lunatic. I agree with her, "sort of"
with the police doesn't sound too convincing.

That's all for now but we'll be back soon enough.

  )-----------------------(
( SAN SILVESTRO IN CAPITE )
  )-----------------------(

Ben will be quite reluctant to profanate anything with the priest standing
right there so all you can do is interrogate him. Guess what? You need to
exhaust all topics of conversation.

Things note-worthy:
 - Father McNamara says Ryan was never a priest here. Seeing how the dialog
loops after that, it's even more fishy...
 - You'll learn some stuff about relics and demons. People really like relics.
Like, maybe they would want to steal them. Dun dun dunnnnn?

That's all you'll get out of him for now so let's go back to our headquarters.

  )---------------(
 ( L'ALBERGO DANTE )
  )---------------(

Use the Business Card on Simon and watch him immediately pick up on the shady
things you want to do. What a fine bearded Robin he is...

  ITEM: Fake police ID

Time to go show it around.

  )--------------(
 ( TEATRO MANZONI )
  )--------------(

Show your brand new fake ID to the Usher to get access to the actors' dressing
room. Enter it, on course. The only thing you can get in here (for now... I'm
a master of suspense!) is an obsolete recording device on the desk.

  ITEM: Tape recorder

Get back out to stumble upon Professor Jones. I forgot who that guy's supposed
to be. For sure, he was in the previous episode(s). Anyway, he'll give you his
address and tell you to come see him the following day.

The best way to make the following day happen is to sleep for the rest of the
current day, isn't it? Go back to your hotel.

  )---------------(
 ( L'ALBERGO DANTE )
  )---------------(

A cutscene will happen. Ben and Simon talk, Alice shows up. Day 1 ends.

\----------------------------------------------------------------------------/
/                                  DAY TWO                                   \
\                             December 28, 2004                              /
/----------------------------------------------------------------------------\

  )---------------(
 ( L'ALBERGO DANTE )
  )---------------(

As you no doubt noticed, day two is the day immediately after day one. How
crazy is that?

You get one point for asking Alice about her family history and then her
ancestor. She also advises you to go back to the police station, which sounds
quite reasonable.

  )--------------(
 ( POLICE STATION )
  )--------------(

Go to Renzi's cell to dicover he hanged himself.

Pick up the paper near there.

  ITEM: Note

Open your inventory. Read the note, then use the hand icon on it to find there
is a faint drawing on the other side.

Go to see the Desk Sergeant and interrogate him to tell him about Renzi's
death and learn about his visitors. From the Vatican. Memories from the Da
Vinci Code are creeping up on me.

Pick up a pencil from the blue cup on the desk, then use it on the note you
found earlier to reveal the imprinted drawing. You little McGyver, you.

Let's go explore the brand new location we gained at the end of the previous
day.

  )-------------(
 ( PERCY'S HOTEL )
  )-------------(

Interrogate Percival Quentin Jones (I'm thinking that in the same tone that I
would think "Samuel L. Jackson") to learn some incosequential things about
demons and that he's totally not a suspicious fellow despite having sort of
lied about teaching in Oxford at some point in a previous game.

Show the drawing to Percy to learn about the Knights of St. Anthony. They
sound like quite the secret club. I bet they've a secret handshake and all.

As you can't rummage through his stuff nor commit various acts of vadalism in
his room with him standing just there, it's time to take our leave.

  )---------------(
 ( L'ALBERGO DANTE )
  )---------------(

Interrogate Simon to learn that Father Ryan's murder is still not in the news.
That seems strange to our Starsky and Hutch.

I think you need to do it before going back to the church. Maybe not. I
haven't tested.

  )-----------------------(
( SAN SILVESTRO IN CAPITE )
  )-----------------------(

Interrogate the priest, who will be far more forthcoming with information now
that you've learnt about the church cover up on your own.

Things of interest:
 - It's a conspiracy!
 - The Vatican official who visisted Renzi is Vincenzo Bianchi
 - St. Anthony is the saint patron of lost items.

Still no profanation in sight so let's go reserach that Bianchi person.

  )---------------(
 ( L'ALBERGO DANTE )
  )---------------(

Ask Simon to research Bianchi. The only thing he can find out is that he's
working at St. Peter's Basilic. As he forgot his mad haxxor skillz in his
other trousers, he can't access the rest.

Does that sound like a new location to check out to you too?

  )----------------------(
( BASILICA DI SAN PIETRO )
  )----------------------(

Let's interrogate that Swiss Guard standing there. Do remember that he loathes
street performers. It will come in handy later. Then go inside the building.

Walk to the right until you see Cardinal Ginovese. I've visited the Vatican
and I don't remeber any cardinals wandering around near the tourists like
that. Maybe because I was in a group of loud and obnoxious kids at the time.
I fitted right in.

Anyway, interrogate your new holy friend. You'll learn that:
 - Bianchi's office is right through that door that you can't access.
 - And that there's a crypt under the Vatican. Full of riches and amulets and
all that kind of holy stuff.

Walk further to the right to access a new screen with a confessional. Enter
and place the Tape Recorder on the shelf. Can you guess where this is going?

Go back to talk to our favourite cardinal once again. Say you'd like to
confess. In the confessional, sit on the bench (interact with it) and start
the Tape Recorder. Confess whatever you want and cut the recording at the end.

Once your confession is over, go find the cardinal and ask to confess once
more. What a dirty soul you must have. Play the recorded tape and get out of
the confessional. Now you can access that door heavily guarded by a little red
rope.

Head into Bianchi's office. Look at all the stuff on the desk. Read the letter
to get Bianchi's home address. Use your notepad on the notepad on the desk to
copy the symbol drawn on it. Compare the two symbols in your inventory (use
one on the other) to notice they're the same. Bad Bianchi, driving people to
suicide.

Notice that fine Gold Box with an hexagonal lock on top? You can't do anything
with it for now.

Time to go back to Robin.

  )---------------(
 ( L'ALBERGO DANTE )
  )---------------(

Ask Simon to research Bianchi's address. I don't think you need to ask Alice
to accompany you right now. You'll need her with you later, though.

  )-------------------(
 ( BIANCHI'S APARTMENT )
  )-------------------(

Interrogate the smoker until you learn about the plumbing problems in the
building.

You can try to use the interphone to convince Bianchi to open the door but
your rather ridiculous excuses won't have much of an effect.

Let's go find a way to get into that apartment. To do that, you need to get
back to the theatre.

  )--------------(
 ( TEATRO MANZONI )
  )--------------(

Go to the actors' dressing room and check the rack for a plumber's costume.

ITEM: Rather cheap Mario cosplay necessary

Use the hand icon in the inventory on the costume.

  ITEM: Opera Glove

Be sure to go to the hotel to ask Alice to accompany you, this time.

  )-------------------(
 ( BIANCHI's APARTMENT )
  )-------------------(

Interact with the call box and say it's the plumber. Bianchi will let you in
after that classic porn quote. Hmm... (+1)

Interrogate Alice. Don't forget the only important part, the one about having
a Plan.I wanted italics, I can only have a capital letter. Put on your sexy
plumber outfit and knock on the door.

Once inside, don't go to the other room and wait for Alice to distract your
host. When he's not looking, snatch his keys from the wall, on the right of
the screen near the fridge.

  ITEM: Bianchi's keys

You can leave without fixing the loo.

  )---------------(
 ( L'ALBERGO DANTE )
  )---------------(

Cutscene. You plan on breaking and entering. Entering, I can agree on. But is
it really breaking if you have the keys? Anyway, Simon comes up with a plan to
distract Bianchi some more and give you time to commit your forfeit.

  )-------------------(
 ( BIANCHI's APARTMENT )
  )-------------------(

Use your illegally acquired keys to unlock the building's door and then
Bianchi's door. Get inside his apartment and go to the bedroom and interact
with the strange object on the dresser to trigger the most frustrating puzzle
of the game.

Well, not for you since I'm here to give you the solution.

And I have to admit I had to look at a help thread myself to solve this. I
understood the principle well enough: St. Anthony is on the box, he's the
saint patron of lost items, therefore click on lost items. You have to choose
the right four buttons and then pull the handle.

The right ones are:
  The Ark of Covenant
  The Fountain of Youth
The Galleon in the Sand (Noah's Ark, I guess)
The Island in the Atlantic (Atlantis, duh.)

Now, I get the Ark of Covenant. I watched Indiana Jones all right. I get the
lost island of Altantis. Really. Noah's Ark, maybe, maybe not. But I don't get
why the Fountain of Youth is more lost than, say, the Philosopher's Stone or
that crown thingy that could be some really important and significant relic
for all I know. Maybe I should review my Bible classics or something.

Anyway, pull the handle and get the cross out.

ITEM: Bianchi's super secretely important cross

That's the moment Bianchi chooses to come back inside. You can't really go out
like that. Use the Plumber Outfit on Ben. Apparently, that makes you less
suspicious.

You run out of there to be transported back to some cutscening at the hotel,
where Alice points out that the cross has an hexagonal bottom. Where have I
heard that before? Your clever plan is to break into St. Peter's Basilica
at night.

Try that in real life. Just for the lulz.

/----------------------------------------------------------------------------\
\                                   DAY TWO                                  /
/                               Later that night...                          \
\----------------------------------------------------------------------------/

  )----------------------(
( BASILICA DI SAN PIETRO )
  )----------------------(

Why did I do another section break? Because I felt like it.

Use the power of the question mark on your friends to tell them to do a street
performance to distract the guard. I haven't tested the other possibilities,
but I'm guessing they don't work.

Watch how Ben sneakily sneaks in. So believable.

Go into Bianchi's office. No need for another confession, Ginovese went back
home like any sane person should have done at this hour.

Use Bianchi's Cross on the Gold Box and then interact with the cross. Holy
secret passageway, Batman! Now, wait, Batman had one behind a clock, didn't
he? I bet it's in the "How to build a church" booklet that you have to include
secret passages behind bookshelves. They draw them on the construction plans
and everything. Look at all the plates under the various relics and Ben will
realise they all come from places where he's been.

Bianchi shows up and a cutscene ensues. When prompted, answer whatever you
want, it doesn't matter. You'll end up in the Vatican Grotto with the mission
to retrieve the Exorcism Amulet for Bianchi.

Go to the back of the room, where the amulet is. Interact with the red cloth
to see the message under it. I'll break it to you, it says "Don't touch with
your bare hands". Never touch cursed mystical artefacts with bare hands.
Eternal Darkness should have taught you that. If you didn't play it, shame on
you. Ben won't take it anyway.

Make your way back to Bianchi and interrogate him. Ask for help last. Only for
convenience as that will transport you back to the room with the amulet. Use
your Opera Glove to take the cursed amulet of curses and trigger a long scene.

Ben and Alice talking about how it's all over and worrying about the future
and going back to their hotel room, slightly drunk and horny. And then they
got married and had many child-

Oh, wait, it's not over?

Well, I guessed as much by looking at my points counter, mind you.

Some nastiness happens until you find yourself in a...

  )-----------(
 ( WINE CELLAR )
  )-----------(

Tight spot, uh?

The little barrel behind you has a loose metallic ring at the bottom. Interact
with it to cut your bindings. Interact with it to detach a piece.

  ITEM: Sharp Metallic Piece

Interact with the spigot on the big barrel three times to reveal an indetation
in the ground. Use your sharp piece of metal to open the compartment and then
interact with the opened comparment to finish the game.

Nice ending. Way to make me wait for Case 8, bastard.

Final Score: 106/106 (Oh, joy.)
